After their first win of the season against the Seattle Seahawks in Week 3, the Washington Commanders looked to build on that momentum in Week 4 in London against the Indianapolis Colts. Unfortunately for the Commanders, that didn't happen, and they fell to the Colts 30-13.
Beyond the fact that Marcus Mariota went down early and Washington had to rely on rookie quarterback Athan Kaliakmanis, the Commanders kept shooting themselves in the foot with penalties. In total, they had 10 penalties for 84 yards. This is the second week in a row penalties have been a major problem for Washington after having nine penalties in their win against Seattle. Commanders left tackle Brandon Coleman didn’t hold back when talking about these penalty issues after the Colts’
game.
“I mean, we say the same thing every week, like, we gotta fix it. But it’s just b******t. There’s stuff that we know we gotta do and there’s stuff that we gotta fix. I hate to say it, but, like, you always say that s***. Like, we gotta fix it yesterday,” Coleman said, via Nicki Jhabvala of The Athletic. “At the end of the day, it’s on us. As an offense, as an O-line, that s**t, that’s just simple communication that just has to go down with the [experience] that we have in our room and how gelled we are. We got to put our arms around Athan and make sure that we’re all on the same page. It’s all about us, and that’s what we got to get fixed.”
Washington has a lot to get sorted out between its quarterback situation, injuries and the penalty issues before playing the New York Giants next Sunday. The Giants are the No. 1 team in the NFC East with only one loss, while the Philadelphia Eagles and Dallas Cowboys are 2-2 and the Commanders are 1-3.
