It’s been a week to remember for Washington Commanders safety Tyler Owens. In Sunday’s season opener against the Philadelphia Eagles, Owens, a gunner on special teams, tossed two Philly players to the ground without breaking stride, then made a perfect tackle on the punt returner.
The play went viral and earned praise from around the world on social media. Several former NFL players, including JJ Watt and Pat McAfee, were in awe of the play. On Tuesday, Owens earned more recognition, winning the first “Angry Runs” scepter of the 2026 season.
“Angry Runs,” created by Good Morning Football’s Kyle Brandt, is a popular weekly segment on the NFL Network in which he names the winner of that week’s most powerful or dominant run. It often goes to a running
back, but receivers, tight ends and even quarterbacks have also won the award. Owens became only the third defensive player to win the award, and the first to win it as a special-teams gunner.
Unfortunately, Owens left Sunday’s game injured. He limped off the field in the second half, and head coach Dan Quinn confirmed on Monday that Owens was dealing with an ankle injury.
“Tyler had an ankle,” Quinn said. “I’ll have a better update Wednesday as to where they’re at. For the soft-tissue ones, we’ll need a day or two more with that. And then Tyler, if he can see how quickly he can turn around with his ankle.”
Owens provided his own update on Tuesday. After winning “Angry Runs,” he joined the Good Morning Football crew for a chat. Jamie Erdahl asked Owens about his ankle.
“I’m feeling great,” Owens said. “I mean, I done got banged up hella times; this ain’t nothing for real. I’ll be good.”
Something to remember: players will always tell you things are good. Owens may truly feel much better, but Washington’s training staff is known to employ a cautious approach with injuries. It will be interesting to see if Owens is on the practice field when the Commanders return on Wednesday. And if so, whether he’s limited or a full participant.
