It’s been a tough week for Washington Commanders head coach Dan Quinn and quarterback Jayden Daniels. After Daniels was tackled in the field of play in Sunday’s game against the New York Giants, preventing a potential game-winning field goal and leading to a tie, Quinn met with the media and took full responsibility for the late-game gaffe.
Daniels also took responsibility
, but some didn’t think it was enough.“We just have to be better,” Daniels said. “We all have to be better. Situational football. Starts with me. Everybody will say the same thing, but we have to be better at situational football.”
On Thursday, Daniels met with the media for the first time since Sunday’s game. As expected, Daniels took full responsibility, admitted his part
in the mistake, and vowed it would never happen again.
“Just going back and reflecting on it and, you know, sitting back and ultimately, I know it’s a lot of he say or whatever you’re trying to make, but ultimately, like, it’s on me at the end,” Daniels said. "I know DQ is getting a lot of slack for it or whatever, you know, but regardless of what happens, I’m the person on the field that’s supposed to calm everything, control everything, and I failed to the standard I told myself to and the standard in this organization. So, it's just something for me to move on. Not saying I’m proud of it or anything. Obviously, looking back, like, it could have resulted in a loss; we tied, but it was a fail in my eyes, and, you know, I know I’m better than that. I hold myself to a higher standard than that.”
Daniels didn't need to say any of that. But you knew he would. He always does and says the right thing. It’s part of what makes him such a special player and beloved teammate. Daniels not only addressed it publicly and in depth on Thursday, but also spoke with his teammates after Sunday’s game. Those things go a long way, and you can bet Quinn was proud of his young quarterback for having his back during such a difficult time.
Daniels and the Commanders head to San Francisco for a Monday night game against the undefeated 49ers.
