“When they last met” is an ongoing series during the NFL season, recalling the preceding game between Washington and the next opponent on the Commanders’ schedule.
Washington 17, Indianapolis 16: Week 08, Oct. 30, 2022
Down by nine points in the final quarter, the Washington Commanders rallied to a 17-16 win over the Indianapolis Colts at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis.
With 39 seconds remaining and Washington at the Indianapolis 34-yard line, Taylor Heinicke dropped back to pass. He looked left, then paused, looked right, then drifted to his right and launched what looked like a Hail Mary. Terry McLaurin certainly wasn’t open, but he leaped and wrestled the ball from Colts DB Stephon Gilmore for the completion as he went to the ground at the Colts 2.
In case you don’t remember or didn’t see it.
Here’s McLaurin’s game-winner against his hometown team:

Heinicke then called his own number and ran a quarterback sneak for the tying touchdown with 22 seconds remaining. Joey Slye then added the point after touchdown, providing the Commanders a 17-16 lead.
It was Heinicke who put the Commanders in a bigger hole when, trailing 9-7 with 12:30 remaining in the game, Heinicke, for some unknown reason, attempted a weak pass over the middle of the field to Cam Sims. The pass was not only weak; it went to Sims, who had two Colts with a better chance of catching it than he did. Shaq Leonard intercepted it at the Washington 39 and returned it 15 yards to the 24. Four plays later, Nyheim Hines scored on a six-yard run, and the Colts led 16-7 with 11:12 remaining.
Yet Heinicke responded on the next possession, completing passes of 10 and 12 yards to Antonio Gibson, 18 yards to Terry McLaurin, 7 yards to J.D. McKissic, 18 yards to Curtis Samuel, and 13 yards to Armani Rogers. But the drive stalled at the 10, and the Commanders settled for a Joey Slye 28-yard field goal with 4:53 remaining, trimming the Colts’ lead to 16-10.
Heinicke finished his day completing 23 of 31 passes for 279 yards, including a second-quarter 9-yard touchdown pass to RB Antonio Gibson that put Washington ahead 7-3. Terry McLaurin led the Commanders with 113 receiving yards on six receptions and eight targets. Antonio Gibson also added 58 receiving yards on seven receptions.
Jonathan Allen led the Commanders’ defense with nine solo tackles, including two tackles for a loss and one quarterback sack.
