The Washington Commanders are 1-3-1 as they head into a Week 6 showdown with the San Francisco 49ers on Monday Night Football. Washington is coming off an embarrassing tie with the New York Giants, where it had a chance to kick a game-winning field goal in the final seconds of overtime but allowed the clock to run out.
Now, the Commanders’ reward is a trip across the country to face one of the NFL’s two remaining undefeated teams.
It’s only Week 6, so there is still plenty of the season left. Anything can happen, something this franchise has shown us before. Whatever happens in Week 6 or beyond, it’s never too early to peek ahead to the 2027 NFL Draft. But if the season ended today, Washington would again hold a top-10 pick, in what’s expected
to be a deep draft.
Pro Football Focus’s Gordon McGuinness recently conducted his first mock draftsince the NFL is past the quarter mark. The Tennessee Titans hold the No. 1 overall pick, and McGuinness has them selecting Ohio State superstar wide receiver Jeremiah Smith. No surprise there.
As for the Commanders, they hold the No. 8 overall pick and select Texas wide receiver Cam Coleman in this mock.
The Commanders need more pass-catchers for quarterback Jayden Daniels, and while Coleman hasn't necessarily blown anyone away this season, he remains a big-play threat. He has averaged 18.7 yards per reception in 2026 and found the end zone five times. Adding a receiver who can challenge defenses downfield would give the Commanders' offense an element it is currently lacking.
The 6-foot-3, 200-pound Coleman has everything you want from a physical standpoint. A transfer from Auburn, Coleman has 17 receptions for 318 yards and five touchdowns this season, and averages 18.7 yards per receptions, which shows his big-play potential.
Wide receiver could be a top option for the Commanders, depending on what happens with Terry McLaurin and Stefon Diggs. McLaurin remains under contract, but his cap number goes up next season. Meanwhile, Diggs will be a free agent. Washington could still keep both and target a young receiver to pair with promising 2026 third-round pick Antonio Williams.
