"One man's loss is another man's gain."
It's an old, wise saying that proves true every day of our lives, and the Washington Commanders will certainly be no exception. On Wednesday, news broke that the Commanders were signing veteran receiver Stefon Diggs. For the Commanders, this is good news for Jayden Daniels. Daniels has gained another veteran receiver who has still managed to excel in recent seasons. Diggs understands the game; he is a hard worker, and Daniels will benefit from having another target besides Terry McLaurin, who knows how to succeed in the NFL.
But it is just as true that, though the signing is good news for Jayden Daniels and, of course, Diggs. It is unfortunate news for the Commanders receiver who was going to make the 53-man
active roster, but now will be released in late August. The Commanders can't simply stash another receiver on the roster; they can't ignore the number of players needed at each position to fit within the 53-man total.

Will the Commanders keep six wide receivers? That seems to be a typical number for most NFL teams. Of course, a team loaded with tight ends might elect to keep an extra one, and thus only five receivers. And the opposite could be true if a receiver excels as a returner or on coverage teams, thus having unusually high special teams value; then a club could keep him as a seventh receiver.
For the sake of argument, if the Commanders are going to keep six receivers this season, who are the six? Keep in mind, if a team keeps six receivers, they might only dress five as "active" on game day. This may be harder, much harder, than we imagine.
Here are the receivers on the 90-man roster currently, so let's simply list them for now. Perhaps this will help during the preseason games to feel the urgency of who might make the team, and who is released.
- Terry McLaurin
- Stefon Diggs
- Treylon Burks
- Antonio Williams
- Luke McCaffrey
- Jaylin Lane
- Dyami Brown
- Van Jefferson
- Jacoby Jones
- Jaden Bradley
- River Cracraft
- Chris Hilton, Jr
- Nick Nash
