The Washington Commanders returned to the practice field on Wednesday for the first time since quarterback Jayden Daniels dislocated his left elbow in Sunday’s Week 2 loss at Dallas.
Daniels, who has already been ruled out of Week 3 against the Seattle Seahawks, is still seeking medical opinions before the Commanders reveal any potential return timeline. He wasn’t the only Washington starter injured on Sunday, as defensive tackle Javon Kinlaw, left tackle Brandon Coleman and right guard Sam Cosmi all left with injuries.
Head coach Dan Quinn revealed on Monday that starting safety Nick Cross suffered an internal injury and stayed overnight in Dallas before flying home.
“Nick Cross was evaluated postgame with an internal injury,” Quinn said. “He
stayed overnight in Dallas and was discharged today and is flying back this afternoon. I didn’t get to hit you to that [last night], but I won’t get into specifics. I was glad he was discharged and on the way back here.”
When the Commanders returned to practice, they had a long list of players sidelined. Quinn already ruled two out for Sunday: Daniels and Cross.
“I know there’s still probably a lot of questions about Jayden, and he’s seeing another specialist today, so I’ll hold off answering any questions about his timeline to return until we get all the info,” he said. “But, like I said on Monday, he’ll be out Sunday. We’ll also rule out one other player. Nick Cross had an internal injury, stayed over in Dallas. Good to have him back.”
On Wednesday’s injury report, Cross was listed out with an illness. In his first year with the Commanders, Cross has been excellent in two games so far, recording 11 tackles, including three for loss.
Third-year safety and special teams standout Tyler Owens is listed as Cross’ backup at strong safety.
