One DC sports talk radio host offered his worst-case scenario on Wednesday.
The talk of Washington Commanders head coach Dan Quinn getting fired next week has arrived.
The Commanders are only 1-3-1 and 0-2-1 in the NFC East. They had a victory sitting there, waiting for a 42-yard field-goal attempt, and the Commanders didn't even get the field-goal unit onto the field! As a result, Dan Quinn has taken a lot of heat this week.
Chris Russell over at The Team 980 offered his theory on what he sees as the worst-case scenario for the Commanders over the next two weeks. With the Commanders having to travel to face the 5-0 San Francisco 49ers, Washington's odds of winning don't look good. The Commanders are 7.5-point underdogs next Monday night for good reason.
“The worst-case scenario is they get blown out on Monday night,” expressed Russell. “They could- not saying they will, but they could. They’re uncompetitive; they are 1-4-1 coming home and a bye week. Here is the worst-case scenario part. They decide not to make a move.”
Russell suggests owner Josh Harris could decide not to fire Dan Quinn, regardless of how bad it is Monday vs. the 49ers. Why? One major reason, and perhaps the main one, is Quinn's decision to go with two rookie NFL coordinators, David Blough and Daronte Jones. Both have struggled at times this season.
That said, if Harris fires Quinn, neither coordinator is ready to serve as an interim NFL head coach. Some have suggested Anthony Lynn, the running backs coach, would be selected to fulfill an interim role. Frankly, that is why some are suggesting that if Harris wants to fire Quinn, he will wait until the season is over.
“Could you imagine what those next 13 days are going to be like? They don’t make a move. They get annihilated Monday night. That is the worst-case scenario, guys. Because at least if they get annihilated Monday night and (Quinn is) fired Tuesday, people are gonna be like, ‘Well, it can’t get any worse. Let’s see what Anthony Lynn has got. That’s the worst-case scenario.”
It’s no secret Russell has always said he wanted Dan Quinn to succeed Ron Rivera as coach. I actually recall Russell expressing on air that he wanted Quinn to be the man selected for the job. So Russell certainly wouldn’t want Quinn fired. If for no other reason, Russell would like to see Quinn turn it around, succeed, and then say, “See, I told you Quinn was the man for the job.”
I sure hope the team can turn things around this season and save his job. But Russell is on to something; if the Commanders aren’t competitive Monday night, the fan base and national media will really turn up the heat on Harris to do something soon. It could get really nasty for Quinn if that happens. We hope Quinn does not have to experience that treatment the rest of this season.
