The Washington Commanders are 1-3; some fans are jumping ship and losing faith in the players, coaches, and the general manager.
Yet, following Sunday’s loss to the Colts, Commanders head coach Dan Quinn said, “A fire is lit, and it’s going to stay lit.” Marshall Kramsky, sports anchor of Washington TV Channel 9, sat down with Quinn Tuesday to discuss where the team is, at 1-3. Kramsky asked Quinn why he said that.
"I know the resolve of the team, and sometimes there are some storms. It doesn’t always happen the first couple of games. But we’re more than equipped to weather that one. Sometimes a team has to go through these struggles to show their resolve, their ability to hit adversity and keep battling through it.”
Indeed, this team has already
faced adversity. They lost their QB1, WR1, OT1, OG1. Then, on Sunday, they lost their QB2 and had to play their rookie seventh-round draft pick/third quarterback, Athan Kaliakmanis from Rutgers. Sunday they also lost their top returner, Jaylin Lane, when he dislocated and fractured an ankle, and is out for the season.
“It sucks when you are going through it, but I do know what they are made of, and I like the standards I am seeing from them practicing. The preparation...it couldn’t have gone better from a preparation standpoint leading into the game.” The Commanders’ defense played well, setting the tone in the first quarter and holding the Colts to just 20 yards. But they still lost 30-13, as the Colts scored the game’s final 13 points in the second half.
“So, I’m very pleased with that part of things, and that’s why I’ve got so much belief and confidence in them. My belief in them is not wavered at all.” It’s good to hear Quinn expressing faith in his team. The 3-1 New York Giants come to Northwest Stadium on Sunday. Washington needs a good week of preparation again, and this time, the offense needs to generate a running game to take some pressure off the quarterback.
After all, we are hoping Jayden Daniels will be back behind center this week, but that hasn’t been confirmed yet. For all we know on Tuesday night, it could again be the rookie from Rutgers getting his first NFL start.
