Washington Commanders wide receiver Stefon Diggs did not practice Wednesday.
Head coach Dan Quinn told local media Wednesday that he wasn’t holding Diggs out of practice because of the hit to his hand early in the 49ers game. On the hit, he appeared to dislocate a finger and received sideline medical attention before returning for the rest of the game. San Francisco should've been penalized on that play.
“No, I think it’ll probably be more of this on the early part of the week, moving forward," Quinn said. "Some of the plan that goes into the third-down stuff is day two. Not going to say every time, but this will be more common than not.”
Diggs leads the team with 24 receptions so far, but he turns 33 in late November. With Terry McLaurin out for
the season, Quinn may be looking for a way to be proactive, keeping Diggs off his feet on Wednesdays and trying to keep him fresh for the rest of the season. Quinn has taken similar care of key veterans, such as Bobby Wagner and Zach Ertz, during his first two years as Washington’s coach.

Diggs is also leading the Commanders with four receiving touchdowns; however, it is certainly noticeable that Diggs is only averaging 8.9 yards per reception. Diggs does also lead the team with 14 receiving first downs through the first six games. Missing the Giants game may also factor into Quinn’s decision, as he wants to keep him as fresh as possible for the rest of the season, especially without their captain and WR1, McLaurin.
Without McLaurin, players such as rookie Antonio Williams and Treylon Burks are expected to have increased roles in the offense, alongside Diggs and tight end Chig Okonkwo.
