The Washington Commanders shocked the world on Sunday, defeating the defending Super Bowl champion Seattle Seahawks 33-31. Washington did it behind backup quarterback Marcus Mariota, who was starting in place of the injured Jayden Daniels. Mariota completed 19 of 31 passes for 183 yards and three touchdowns. He also had a key run late in the fourth quarter to clinch the win.
Washington not only broke Seattle’s 12-game winning streak dating back to last November, but it did so without several key starters, including Daniels. In addition to left tackle Laremy Tunsil, who tore his triceps in August, the Commanders also played without right guard Sam Cosmi, tight end Chig Okonkwo, linebacker Frankie Luvu, and safety Nick Cross.
The second half was
a roller coaster: the Commanders held a two-touchdown lead, then Seattle came back to tie it. After a Washington field goal, second-year linebacker Kain Medrano, playing in place of the injured Leo Chenal, returned a Sam Darnold interception 50 yards to push the Commanders' lead to nine points.
Seattle scored quickly, so Mariota and the offense needed to finish the game. They did.
