The Washington Commanders’ struggles in international games continued on Sunday morning when they fell to the Indianapolis Colts 30-13 at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in London, England.
The Commanders got off to a slow start offensively, settling for two field goals in the first quarter, but the defense held strong and kept the Colts from scoring. Just before Washington’s second field goal, quarterback Marcus Mariota injured his ankle when a player rolled over it, and he did not return. In his place, rookie Athan Kaliakmanis made his NFL debut.
The Colts scored 10 points in the second quarter and never looked back. The Commanders’ defense had no answer for Jonathan Taylor, who rushed for 95 yards and two touchdowns. The Commanders also lost return
specialist Jaylin Lane, likely for the season, and that’s when Dyami Brown showed up. His play against the Colts on Sunday earned him Player of the Game honors. Admittedly, injuries made the decision tough.
Brown led the Commanders with three receptions on four targets for 65 yards. He also recorded three kick returns for 82 yards after Lane left the game on a cart.
In all reality, this game was difficult to watch. Penalties were a major factor. The Commanders were called for 10 penalties for 84 yards, while the Colts had just one penalty for five yards, and you’ll never convince Commanders fans that the game wasn’t rigged. Combined with the number of injuries to the Commanders, it was an incredibly frustrating game to watch.
Dyami Brown has spent the bulk of his career in Washington, and he showed today why the Commanders keep him around. He may not be flashy. He may not be an elite receiver or return man. But he can get the job done in a pinch, and he showed that today despite the team’s loss.
Next week, the Commanders hope to have Jayden Daniels back under center when they host the New York Giants in Week 5.
