The Washington Commanders won against the Seattle Seahawks 33-31in their third game of the season and first win of the year at Northwest Stadium.
Washington got on the board with its first touchdown on its second drive to take a 7-0 lead. Seattle responded with a touchdown in the second quarter, but the Commanders struck back with a touchdown from Treylon Burks to retake the lead. Both teams also kicked field goals, giving Washington a 17-10 lead going into halftime.
On their opening drive of the second half, the Commanders scored another touchdown to take a 14-point lead. However, the Seahawks scored a touchdown to make it 24-17 and again in the fourth quarter to tie it at 24-24. Washington took the lead back with a field goal, then a pick-six
from linebacker Kain Medrano. But the Commanders got a penalty after the pick-six, which cost them the extra point. They still led 33-24.
Seattle responded quickly with a touchdown before the two-minute warning to make it 33-31. Washington had to keep the ball to keep the Seahawks from getting another chance to score. On a critical third-and-nine, running back Rachaad White picked up 19 yards. This run forced Seattle to use all of their timeouts to preserve time on the clock. On another crucial third down, quarterback Marcus Mariota kept the ball on a zone read to pick up nine yards and get the first down, sealing the win for the Commanders. They finally got their first win of the season, 33-31, over the Seattle Seahawks.

This game had plenty of highlights, but Medrano's pick-six put the Commanders in a position to win. Without this crucial turnover, who knows if Washington would have come away with the win. It was also an impressive play by a second-year player who had played in only 11 games before this week — exclusively on special teams.
Numbers to know
- 3: Backup quarterback Marcus Mariota had three passing touchdowns in this game. While 183 passing yards isn’t spectacular, turning that into three touchdowns to propel your team to victory is impressive, especially for a backup still developing chemistry with the Commanders’ playmakers. It’s also against the NFL’s best defense. That’s also the number of turnovers the Seahawks had, which were crucial to the win.
- 4/5: This is how well the Seattle Seahawks did in the red zone. While this was a fun game to watch, Washington could have made it a little easier if they had gotten more stops against the Seahawks in the red zone or prevented Seattle from getting there in the first place.

- QB Marcus Mariota: Mariota did not have the best passing metrics. But when the Commanders needed him, he showed up. His three passing touchdowns were critical, but his most important play of the game came on the ground. Mariota’s nine-yard run on third and eight sealed the win for the Commanders. Without that play, Seattle would have had about a minute to get into field goal range and win.
- WR Terry McLaurin: It was no secret the ball wasn't coming McLaurin’s way in the first two weeks of the season. However, Mariota changed that in this game, throwing it to him nine times. McLaurin turned that into six catches for 77 yards and a touchdown. This was easily his best game of the season.
- LB Kain Medrano: Scoring a pick-six late in the fourth quarter to put the defending Super Bowl Champions on ice is definitely worthy of a game ball. He also finished the game with five total tackles and three solo tackles.
What’s next
The Washington Commanders will look to build off of this win when they take on the Indianapolis Colts in London next Sunday. Quarterback Jayden Daniels is considered week-to-week, although he is unlikely to play in this game; Washington will most likely start Marcus Mariota again.
