Washington Commanders head coach Dan Quinn made a decision at the end of the first half that could end up defining Washington’s season. With three seconds left, on third-and-goal from the one-yard line, the Commanders went for a touchdown to tie the game.
That was the play when quarterback Jayden Daniels re-dislocated his left elbow, leaving the Commanders in a potentially precarious position for the rest of the season. When asked about the decision, Quinn expressed no regrets, despite the outcome.
“Looking back on it, at the one-yard line, we need touchdowns, and so I don’t regret the call. Obviously, any time someone’s injured, you play the what-if game. I don’t think this is one of those times for me. I hate that it happened. I didn’t see it,”
Quinn said. “But I wasn’t hesitant about going into that spot. We wanted to be aggressive in this game against their offense. So, I don’t regret that job. Obviously, the outcome sucks.”
Washington lost 37-20, though backup quarterback Marcus Mariota had a solid game: 11 completions on 16 attempts for 111 yards and a touchdown, with a quarterback rating of 109.1.
It is unclear when Daniels will return this season. He won’t play in Week 3, as Quinn said the team will wait for further tests to determine a return timeline. Quinn confirmed on Monday that Mariotawill start at quarterback in their next game against the defending Super Bowl champions, the Seattle Seahawks, who are 2-0 despite playing with a backup quarterback.
