The Washington Commanders had their chances. Instead of leaving with a win and improving to 2-3 while only one game down in the NFC East, the Commanders let a 27-13 fourth-quarter lead slip away and ended up in a 27-27 tie with the New York Giants.
The game went to overtime with the Giants driving for the win late, when Washington defensive tackle Daron Payne forced a Cam Skattebo fumble, giving possession back to the Commanders. Quarterback Jayden Daniels quickly moved Washington down the field into field-goal range. Without a timeout, the Commanders only needed to snap the ball and spike it to give rookie kicker Drew Stevens a chance to kick the game-winning field goal. Instead, Daniels ran the ball, letting the clock run out and the game end
in a tie.
It’s almost as if Daniels thought he had a timeout remaining. He didn’t.
Another missed opportunity for the Commanders, who fall to 1-3-1.
As you'd expect, social media was all over this one, mocking Daniels, the Commanders, Dan Quinn and the Giants, too.
Here are some of the best reactions from Sunday's 27-27 tie.

I have never seen anything like that. Tehnically It's a tie, but this is absolutely a gut-wrenching loss. A blown lead. A second chance after a fumble and a horrendous decision at the end. There was one option if you wanted to waste time: Throw the ball away. But why not just…

A horrendous tie that feels like a horrendous loss. The kind of result in the kind of season that leads to people being fired.

Wasted our entire day watching a Dan Quinn coached football team, I'm changing my entire life starting now

Reasonable mistakes happen. We’re all human and have erred and will do so again. But when a doctor cuts off a patient’s pinky because of a strep throat diagnosis, he doesn’t get to practice medicine anymore. It’s time.

They don’t even know I cover the Commanders. They are just making fun of how incompetent it was.
Butt of a joke.
That was one of the most humiliating, embarrassing, unacceptable finishes in franchise history. I cannot believe it just happened.

Nobody is getting fired. I would even say nobody should get fired. But that was a fireable sequence. That cannot happen at this level. It is just a…
What a bunch of bullshit. An NFL quarterback in his third year should know the situation. Zero urgency, zero awareness. https://t.co/MGevGjPJUR

Up 2 scores in 4th quarter. Blow it. Gifted a missed FG. Gifted a fumble. Convert nothing. Tie that feels like an awful loss

Thoughts on today’s tie vs. New York:
— Eric Sully (@CommandersRealm) October 11, 2026
• Hard game to even look back on and analyze due to the despicable ending.
• Jayden was overall a superstar again, but that final blunder (while I primarily blame the coach) will overshadow it forever.
• Defense was serviceable in the…

Either way - this is a TERRIBLE look for Dan Quinn and the #Commanders organization because even if JD 5 was instructed, he didn't get it or do it.

The complete lack of discipline all year is more reflective of a soft staff and a lot of atta boys and days off.
I blame players…
After digesting this Commanders tie and talking to players in the locker room, my one big thought:
— Scott Abraham (@Scott7news) October 12, 2026
This is all on Dan Quinn and the offensive coaches.
They over complicated all of it. No play should have been called. It should have been a spike. Field goal. Game over.
Dan Quinn needs to be fired tonight. I rarely like in season firings, but that is simply unforgivable.
— Ken Johannesen (@BurgundyBurner) October 11, 2026
Well, I suppose you could blow it worse than the #Commanders just did, but I’m not sure how.
— Mike Greenberg (@Espngreeny) October 11, 2026
What the hell was that??? That was inexcusable! Why did you run a play????

Can you fathom that a professional football team can mismanage a final play any worse than the Commanders. Despicable football IQ by the team and the QB to allow this to happen. Spike the damn ball and kick the field goal. WTF is this 3rd grade football!

That is without exaggeration a fireable offense from Dan Quinn
— Football Analysis (@FBallAnalysisYT) October 11, 2026
Rewatching it in absolute awe. So many levels of stupidity on display. Dan Quinn doesn’t call plays, doesn’t do anything. All he has to do is let the QB or OC know they don’t have any timeouts. That’s all he has to do and he couldn’t even do that. https://t.co/trYOUQTUoR

This was a must-win game for Washington so to tie in the fashion that they did is an utter disgrace. Two separate 2-score leads, blew them, got blessed in OT with a missed FG and fumble, and blew a layup of an GW opportunity in all-time fashion. You’re in no better position than…

Commanders offensive lineman (Chris Paul) said here they discussed having no timeouts in the huddle. I think Jayden Daniels just went rogue. His first read was covered and he forgot to throw it away. Now he’s trying to deflect the blame. https://t.co/wss1LHuMG5 pic.twitter.com/354pqK5Jeu

Jayden in his presser not directly throwing anybody under the bus but subtly is. He said the lack of timeouts needed to be communicated top-down even though he said he needs to be better in that situation.
— Kevin Sheehan (@kevinsheehanDC) October 11, 2026
One of the worst blundered endings in franchise history. Fireable offense. No other way to put it. Obviously Jayden needs to know also. Or at least be informed. All-time bad loss(tie),
