The Washington Commanders returned to practice on Wednesday ahead of Sunday’s Week 2 matchup with the Dallas Cowboys. Before taking the field, Washington revealed a roster move. The Commanders were signing 10-year veteran offensive lineman Lucas Patrick. Fans have been clamoring for GM Adam Peters to add veteran offensive line help, and Patrick helps fill that need.
To sign Patrick, the Commanders needed to make room. In a corresponding move, they placed third-year linebacker Jordan Magee on injured reserve. That means Magee will be out for at least the next four weeks. Magee injured his hamstring in Sunday’s season opener against the Eagles. He was one of four Washington players injured against Philadelphia. Of those four players, only safety
Tyler Owens (ankle) practiced on Wednesday.
The others: linebacker Frankie Luvu (groin) and tight end Chig Okonkwo (hamstring). Head coach Dan Quinn provided an update.
“Frankie and Chig will be out today,” Quinn said. “Some uncertainty there, for sure, as it gets to the weekend. I’ll definitely have some insights for you by Friday, but they’ll be out today.”
That doesn’t sound promising for Sunday. The good news is that neither injury appears long-term, but Washington could certainly use both Luvu and Okonkwo for Sunday’s clash with the Cowboys. Luvu was outstanding against Philadelphia, recording four tackles, including one for loss and a sack, before exiting early in the third quarter. Okonkwo caught two passes for 16 yards in his Washington debut.
With Luvu and Magee out, rookie Sonny Styles and Leo Chenal will handle the bulk of snaps at linebacker. At tight end, the Commanders will have the trio of John Bates, Ben Sinnott and Colson Yankoff.
