Through the first six weeks of the NFL season, it is fair to say that the NFC East is the worst division in football. Only the New York Giants have a winning record, but none of the teams in the division have won in the past two weeks.
Odds are that will change during Week 7 with the Dallas Cowboys playing the Philadelphia Eagles on Monday Night Football, unless they tie as the Giants and Washington Commanders did. With Washington on bye this week, they’re focused on regrouping and stringing together wins, since they only have one, and it came against the defending Super Bowl champions in Week 3.
Given the state of the NFC East, the Commanders are still in the playoff race even with a 1-4-1 record. If the Giants lose against the Houston Texans,
which is certainly possible given they are double-digit underdogs, the division leader will only have three wins through seven weeks. Therefore, Washington would stay two games back in the division. Simply put, the NFC East is wide open, and the Commanders’ players know it, including wide receiver Stefon Diggs, who is expected to step into a larger role after Terry McLaurin’s season-ending injury against the San Francisco 49ers.
“It’s still wide open. Where we are and where the league is, it’s kind of interesting. It’s a weird spot right now,” Diggs said last week. “Nobody’s kind of made it clear that, that team that we just faced, a hell of a football team. That’s one of those guys that’s going to be in the running, going to be contending in the playoffs and deep in the football in January. So, we played a decent game. We could have played a lot better. We’re still in it, just like all these games that we’ve been in in the past couple weeks. We’ve been in it. We just got to find a way to pull them out and play at a high level and execute better.”
The Commanders’ next game will be against the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday Night Football. Both teams enter the game with losing records and need a win to keep their division chances alive, especially with the Giants on bye.
