For the second straight season, Washington Commanders quarterback Jayden Daniels is missing time with a dislocated left elbow. This season, he sustained the injury on the final play before halftime against the Dallas Cowboys. Daniels has already been ruled out for the Commanders’ Week 3 game against the Seattle Seahawks.
Marcus Mariota will start in Daniels’ place again. In the eight games Mariota started last season, he went 2-6 with 10 touchdowns and six interceptions. He was also sacked 13 times. Safety Quan Martin discussed how difficult it was to see Daniels go down and said he has confidence in Mariota going forward.
“Honestly, it was tough. To see all the work he put in through the offseason, all the work he put in to get back healthy and
kind of just have a freak accident like that happen, it was just, you just feel bad,” Martin said. “You see your brother going down after all the work he put in and the time. First one in the building, last one to leave. So, you see something like that happen, you obviously, you feel bad for him. But the whole thing with Marcus, seeing him come in and you see what he can do when his number is called. Full belief in Marcus. I don’t think there will be no drop-off from 5. But it’s tough.”
The bright side for the Commanders is that Daniels will not be out for the rest of the season, as he has decided not to have surgery and instead play with a brace. He’ll still miss time, but Washington isn’t putting Daniels on injured reserve. The Commanders’ defense will have to step up while he is out to salvage their playoff chances this year.
