The Washington Commanders finalized their initial 53-man roster on Sunday and, on Monday, made two more moves, transferring Laremy Tunsil and Johnny Newton to the injured reserve. After moving Tunsil and Newton to IR with the designation to return, Washington re-signed cornerback Fabian Moreau and defensive tackle Shy Tuttle.
The Commanders returned to practice for the first time since finalizing their roster, and there was some good news. Center Nick Allegretti, quarterback, tight end Ben Sinnott, and defensive tackle Daron Payne were back at practice on Monday.
Allegretti’s return is most notable given concerns about the center position. He missed virtually all of training camp after moving over from guard this offseason. Head coach Dan Quinn
and general manager Adam Peters are not concerned about Allegretti.
“So, not having Nick for most of camp was something we had to work through, but we have a ton of confidence in him,” Peters said. “And he’s played, I think 3,000-some-odd snaps in this league. And he’s played good football for us before. He went through the whole offseason, so we’re really confident. He’s not a guy that needs a ton of reps, especially from a mental standpoint.”
Allegretti strained his calf on the first day of training camp, which highlighted Washington’s depth concerns at center. Those concerns were exacerbated one week later when star left tackle Laremy Tunsil tore his triceps. That move had a domino effect on the line, forcing Brandon Coleman, who was competing to start at left guard, back to left tackle.
Mariota sprained his MCL in the preseason opener, but the prognosis was always that he’d be ready for Week 1. Sinnott was injured late in camp, while Payne was dealing with an undisclosed injury.
Washington opens the season in 13 days on the road at Philadelphia.
