On Saturday, the NFL announced it fined San Francisco 49ers star linebacker Fred Warner $65,673 for two hits on Washington Commanders tight end Chig Okonkwo in Monday night’s 23-17 Niners win.
Officials initially ruled one play a penalty on the field, but then incorrectly picked it up. Washington fans were irate during Monday’s game, as it was the latest in a recent series of questionable calls against the Commanders. San Francisco safety Malik Mustapha got away with an illegal hit against Washington wide receiver Stefon Diggs on the Commanders’ first drive. It was on third down, and Washington had to settle for a field goal.
The fines against Warner were the NFL’s admission that its officials got it wrong—at least twice. That doesn’t mean it would
have changed the result of the game. Washington had its chances, including scoring on a go-ahead fourth-quarter touchdown that was wiped out by an unnecessary facemask penalty on left guard Chris Paul—it was a correct call.
Still, the NFL world reacted to Warner’s illegal hits and subsequent fines from Monday’s game.
Fred Warner seemed to get away with a couple illegal hits Monday night against the Commanders. On one play, a flag was thrown but the officials picked it up without a penalty being called. He's fined a total of $65,673 by the NFL for two hits in that game, however. He can appeal… https://t.co/N47UeIEavl

All the conversation about inappropriate use of the helmet by 49ers LB Fred Warner was addressed by the league with two fines totalling
— Ben Standig (@BenStandig) October 24, 2026
$65,673.
$17,911 for a hit on a defenseless player (flag was thrown then reversed) and $47,762 for use of the helmet. No flag thrown.
Would have rather had personal fouls called and he be ejected which is how things would happen if it weren’t a clown world

Real nice of them to address this when it matters least.

They‘re helpless to undo the damage
— charlie (@60s_in_bowie) October 24, 2026
They could’ve fined Warner for at least 3 hits to the head in that game.

We need AI refs. Game is borderline unwatchable

Incompetence or corruption?
— One Man Mutiny Shooting Spitballs at the Moon (@putneyjk) October 25, 2026
Fair question . . .
@NFL is a joke and defenseless BS statement

Take some of that referee crew salary because they are bogus picking up flags multiple weeks. Absolutely egregious how they officiate these games.
— Neven Milline (@nevsprophecy36) October 25, 2026
Fines are a slight apology for the referees’ negligence that go on unaddressed during a game.

Refs need to be held accountable for once. If they cant be interviewed by the media, they dont have to speak to the media, then the NFL needs to do something to hold them accountable…. Yall missed the Warner helmet to helmet tackle on Diggs towards the beginning of the game

"None called in game? Nice league Goodell." Fred Warner is docked $65,673 by the NFL for two unpenalized hits against Washington, pushing his season fines past $100K. 🏈https://t.co/EWJ65UMyik

Hey @NFL even Stevie Wonder would've called personal fouls on Fred Warner on Monday night with his hits to the helmet multiple times against the @Commanders pic.twitter.com/Oo7ZDkjc24

Pocket change for Fred Warner, what is the NFL doing to fix the officiating so there are no miss obvious calls and picking up flags.

— Brian Mitchell (@BMITCHLIVE30) October 24, 2026
Cool we'll add those fines to our record and it'll help us out a lot right right?

Multi-billion dollar sports industry and missing penalty calls that can change the outcome of a game is absurd. Nullifies sports betting. @NFLOfficiating @NFL
