The Washington Commanders entered their game against the Indianapolis Colts without starting quarterback Jayden Daniels because of a left elbow injury. Now, they are without backup quarterback Marcus Mariota for the rest of the game because of a knee injury. He left in the first quarter, and rookie Athan Kaliakmanis has been in the game since.
“We’re gutted for him,” head coach Dan Quinn told the NFL Network at the start of the third quarter. “He’ll be out for the rest of the game.”
In addition to Mariota being out for the rest of this game, defensive end Charles Omenihu was also ruled out with a groin injury. Both injuries add to the Commanders’ ongoing injury problems this season, as they were already dealing with numerous players, including
Daniels and star receiver Terry McLaurin, going into this game.
Mariota was playing well prior to his injury with three completions for 46 yards as well as a 35-yard run that set up Washington’s second field goal of the game. He was also coming off his performance against the Seattle Seahawks in Week 3, which gave the Commanders their first win of the season.
While the extent of Mariota’s injury is currently unknown, Quinn seemed concerned. Mariota has a long injury history, though he has not had significant knee issues. With Kaliakmanis as the only healthy quarterback on the roster, Washington will likely be in the market for a quarterback after this game, whether they acquire one in a trade or free agency.
