The Washington Commanders went out to San Francisco to take on the 49ers on Monday Night Football.
This was a tough spot for the Commanders. The team had to travel across the country to take on an undefeated team, so, to no surprise, the Commanders were a big underdog. It looked like we were headed for a blowout, as the Commanders trailed 20-3 at halftime.
However, the team came alive in the second half and had the chance to win the game at the very end. Ultimately, the team came up short, losing 23-17. Now, let’s identify the studs and duds from this performance.
Stud: Jayden Daniels
Jayden Daniels played well enough to win. He had some bad moments, like throwing the ball away on fourth down, but he ultimately played well. Daniels completed 29 of 40 passes for 300
yards with two touchdowns and zero interceptions.
It’s even more impressive when you realize Terry McLaurin left early with an injury. Daniels spread the ball around well and fought valiantly against one of the best defenses in the league.
Dud: Ground game
It was always going to be hard to run on the 49ers, and the Commanders were in a massive hole for half of the game, but the ground game was still disappointing. The team averaged 3.1 yards per carry and ended with 53 total yards.
Rachaad White luckily contributed in the pass game, because he only rushed for 27 yards. Daniels also couldn't do much on the ground. It would have been nice to be able to control the game a little better and not force Daniels to throw 40 times.
Stud: Pass catchers
I have to include all the pass-catchers because multiple guys stepped up without McLaurin. Chig Okonkwo caught seven passes for 69 yards, while Treylon Burks, Stefon Diggs, and Antonio Williams all had at least three catches of their own.
Diggs and Rachaad White both caught touchdown passes. This game proved that it doesn’t have to all be on Diggs and McLaurin going forward. Okonkwo makes such a difference when he’s healthy.
Dud: Amik Robertson
Amik Robertson has largely been solid, but he didn’t have his best moment on Monday. The veteran struggled with Mike Evans, and if Evans hadn’t left with an injury, it could have been much worse.
Evans ended with three catches for 94 yards, and Brock Purdy had open receivers almost all night. That’s not all on Robertson, but he’s been the steadying presence in the secondary, and he wasn’t on Monday night, at least in the first half.
Stud: K’Lavon Chaisson
K'Lavon Chaisson did something nobody else has done in 2026- forced Christian McCaffrey to fumble. The 49ers were driving in the red zone, and Chaisson punched the ball out from McCaffrey, and Frankie Luvu recovered. That play kept the Commanders in the game.
Chaisson finished with four tackles and a pressure, along with the forced fumble.
Dud: Offensive Line
Once again, the Commanders’ offensive line left a lot to be desired. The 49ers racked up four tackles and 10 quarterback hits on the night. Daniels avoided several sacks, and pressure ended a few drives prematurely.
On the last play of the game, the Commanders had a chance for a Hail Mary, but Daniels couldn’t even get the ball off because three 49ers were in his face.
