More than a few young athletes have gone to the NFL, NBA, MLB and talk about what they are going to do. They make it sound easy. You know why? Because they think it will be easier than it will be. They have not yet gained enough professional experience to understand how much more competitive things are professionally.
That might be the case with Washington Commanders’ receiver/punt returner Jaylin Lane. Oh, he has exhibited a very sincere nature. He seems like a genuine young man. So he certainly has good intentions. But he did tell Scott Abraham this week, “I just think how we attack every day at practice. At the end of the day, this is the only sport where you practice more than you play.”
Uh oh, Lane apparently has no idea how many hours swimmers
spend in the pool each week, much more than during a swim meet. There’s not a golfer who made it successfully to the PGA Tour that didn’t spend hundreds of hours on the range, working on their short game, finally to have the opportunity to play in a tournament.
“Your days at practice leading up to the game, they got to be really good. And I think this is a really good week for us because yesterday we had a great day. Today we came out and attacked. So I think we are just, you know, ramping up to get ready.”

When Abraham asked, “What is this offense going to be like?” Lane quickly responded, “Yeah, it’s going to be explosive! We got a lot of explosive guys on the field. And Blough and the rest of the offensive side, they’ve been putting us in great positions to use our explosiveness. So, expect an explosive offense. I’m excited.”
I’m glad Lane is excited; I’m glad he really likes OC David Blough’s offense and coaching. I hope he’s up to the challenge of NFL defenses. In the Commanders’ first game, the offense will face the Eagles’ defense. In the third week, they will face the Seahawks defense, which led Seattle to a Super Bowl Championship in 2025.
Hope Lane can have his own success this season.
