The Washington Commanders shocked the NFL world on Sunday, upsetting the defending Super Bowl champion Seattle Seahawks 33-31 in their home opener. It was Washington’s first win, and now the Commanders must prepare for an overseas trip to face the Indianapolis Colts next Sunday in London.
The beat-up Commanders could be getting some of their starters back. Washington, which was without several starters against Seattle, is leaving for London on Tuesday. So if injured players don’t travel with the team, they won’t play. Head coach Dan Quinn announced on Monday that three of those injured players would travel with the team, including star quarterback Jayden Daniels.
“I know you have some questions regarding Jayden,” Quinn said. “Good to report that
he and [LB] Frankie [Luvu] and [TE] Chig [Okonkwo] will all be back in practice this week in some form and fashion.”
Confirming that all three will be at practice this week means they are traveling with the team to London. However, it doesn’t guarantee they will play. Daniels would appear the least likely to play in Week 4, as most believe he will return in Week 5 against the New York Giants.
Quinn was then asked about a return-to-play timeline for Daniels.
“We haven’t just yet, but I think once we get there, that’ll give us a little more indication of where we’re at, how we can go into that space,” he said. “But just the fact that we’re working back into that space gives me optimism heading into the week about where we’re at and the health of the team. So that’s a good sign. We’ve been banged up in this first part, and so, Leo, yesterday was obviously a significant one, and I’m certainly glad to hear reports trending on the upswing for him. But I’ll have a better sense when we get there and get settled, and then I can give you a better update. Really, after Thursday is when we’ll get our most speed.”
As for Washington’s other injured starters, right guard Sam Cosmi [concussion] and safety Nick Cross [illness] will both be re-evaluated on Tuesday before the team leaves for London.
