Former Texas A&M wide receiver Mike Evans left the San Francisco 49ers’ 35-13 victory over the Miami Dolphins with a hip injury, but the early outlook appears encouraging.
Evans remained on the sideline with his helmet after exiting. Head coach Kyle Shanahan said he could have returned if the game had been closer. San Francisco led 35-6 when Evans left and did not need to bring him back. Before the injury, Evans caught passes of 10 and 27 yards from Brock Purdy. The longer reception took San Francisco to Miami’s 1-yard line and set up a Christian McCaffrey touchdown on the next play.
Shanahan said Monday that the 49ers will manage Evans’ workload throughout the week. The team has not indicated that he will miss an extended period, but his practice
participation and final injury designation will give a clearer picture of his availability for Week 3 against Arizona.
Evans’ status matters even more because San Francisco’s receiver depth has taken several hits. Demarcus Robinson suffered a high ankle sprain against Miami and, according to Shanahan, could be placed on injured reserve. Rookie De’Zhaun Stribling is already on injured reserve, while Christian Kirk is not yet ready to return. Shanahan said Jordan Watkins, Jacob Cowing and KhaDarel Hodge could take on larger roles if Robinson misses time.
For now, the 49ers’ plan is to monitor Evans and manage his work in practice. His ability to play Sunday will become clearer as the week progresses.
