third year at the helm is expected to be his most challenging, given the new 9-game SEC schedule.Returning for his second full starting season, redshirt junior quarterback Marcel Reed, who threw for a career-high 3,169 yards and 25 touchdowns last season, also threw 12 interceptions and will now play behind four new offensive line starters. While it's clear that Reed must improve as a pocket passer for the Aggies to have a shot at making
it back to the College Football Playoff, Texas A&M's defense will play a significant role as well.
Even after a record 10 players were selected in the 2026 NFL Draft back in April, third-year coach Mike Elko stated on Tuesday during the first preseason camp press conference that the Aggies' 2026 secondary is deeper than it's ever been and looks like the roster's best unit outside of the deep wide receiver rotation.
With safeties Dalton Brooks and Marcus Ratcliffe returning, veteran cornerbacks Dezz Ricks and Julio Humphrey will now be paired with Tennessee transfer CB Rickey Gibson, who is nationally regarded as a lockdown defender with NFL potential.

Throw in Colorado transfer safety Tawfiq Byard, who did not allow a passing touchdown in over 500 snaps last season, and Texas A&M's surprising lack of interceptions, despite allowing 187 passing yards per game last season, should finally be a thing of the past given the rotation's combined high football IQ and versatility to make plays on the ball.
Replacing Tyreek Chappell at nickel corner will come down to former safety Bryce Anderson and cornerbacks Jordan Shaw and Bravion Rogers competing for the starting job this fall.
