Texas A&M will open SEC play against the Kentucky Wildcats at Kyle Field, and all eyes will be on the offense. The first two games under first-time play-caller Holmon Wiggins have been a mixed bag for several reasons. With the Wildcats coming to town, he will get another chance to figure out what works for this offense before the Aggies reach the meat of their schedule.
The 50 points against Missouri State were somewhat misleading because of the level of competition. The Aggies got away with some things that wouldn't work once the competition got stiffer, as they saw against Arizona State in Week 2. A&M produced only 255 total yards and converted 3-of-12 third downs.
On top of that, the running game has not found its groove. That mostly has to do
with four new starters learning to gel and Wiggins determining which running plays best suit their skill sets.
Kentucky led Alabama 17-13 at halftime before surrendering 32 unanswered points, so the Wildcats have shown they can compete early. Wiggins must prevent another slow start by finding answers for the offensive line, getting Marcel Reed comfortable and establishing the run. The Aggies cannot count on their defense scoring two touchdowns every game, so the offense needs to find a way to create more balance.
It is not that the play calls have necessarily been bad, because some of the problems have come down to players not executing or missing assignments. If the Aggies can learn from last week’s film, identify what worked and build upon it, they should be able to take some meaningful strides against Kentucky.
