Texas A&M finally looked like a solid-to-good football team after defeating Arkansas 34-7 on Saturday night, and while the team still has plenty of issues to fix on both sides of the ball, earning an SEC win after consecutive losses has to feel good heading into Week 6. However, the schedule only gets tougher, starting with a road game against Missouri.
On the positive side, starting quarterback Marcel Reed benefited from a solid rushing attack led by freshman running back KJ Edwards, who led the Aggies with 66 yards and two touchdowns, both career highs. Reed finished 13/19 for 170 yards and ran for 66 yards and a touchdown, making better decisions in the pocket while the offensive line allowed only three pressures.
On defense, sophomore Edge
Marco Jones recorded a team-high six pressures and one sack, finally looking like the player all of us in Aggie media praised during the offseason, while the linebacker rotation, especially transfer Ray Coney, looked improved in coverage, matching the secondary's bounce-back performance.
Next Saturday, Texas A&M will face Missouri on the road at 11:00 a.m. on ABC, as the Tigers are coming off a surprising blowout 45-17 win vs. No. 8 Florida, absolutely destroying the Gators in every facet of the game, led by QB Austin Simmons' 23/30, 340 yards, and two-touchdown performance.
This will be Texas A&M's second early-window matchup after defeating Arizona State 48-20 in Kyle Field in Week 2, but compared to the Sun Devils, the Aggies will face one of the SEC's faster defenses and will need more from Marcel Reed and to avoid explosive plays in the passing game.
