Former Texas A&M linebacker Edgerrin Cooper opened his third NFL season with an elite performance, even as the Green Bay Packers fell 39-22 to the Minnesota Vikings.
Cooper’s biggest play came in the fourth quarter when he sprinted through the heart of the offensive line for a sack. He used his speed and instincts to bring down Carson Wentz and the running back at the same time for a six-yard loss. The former Aggie consistently found his way into the backfield and was one of Green Bay’s most disruptive defenders. He is seeing the field much better in Year 3 and could be in line for a major contract extension when that time comes.
Cooper entered the season as one of the players expected to benefit from new defensive coordinator Jonathan Gannon’s
arrival. After producing 13 tackles for loss and 3.5 sacks as a rookie, Cooper recorded 118 tackles but only four tackles for loss and half a sack during his second season.
His Week 1 performance offered an early indication that Green Bay could use his athleticism more aggressively in 2026. With star edge rusher Micah Parsons dealing with an injury, Cooper is the most logical player to move around the defense and create favorable pass-rushing opportunities.
Green Bay’s defense still has plenty to correct after allowing 29 consecutive second-half points. However, Cooper’s productive opener was an encouraging sign that the former Texas A&M standout could take another step forward in his third NFL season.
