Former Texas A&M wide receiver Mike Evans showed Sunday that a rib injury was not going to keep him from making a major impact for the San Francisco 49ers.
Evans caught seven of his 10 targets for 113 yards and a touchdown during San Francisco’s 32-29 victory over Seattle. It was his first 100-yard performance since joining the 49ers and his highest receiving total of the season. Pro Football Focus graded Evans at 91.4, the highest mark among all NFL wide receivers during Week 5. Green Bay’s Matthew Golden finished second at 88.9, followed by Christian Watson at 84.2.
Evans did much more than pile up yards. He consistently won contested catches, moved the chains and gave Brock Purdy a target he could trust in important situations. His touchdown
came on a 13-yard reception during the third quarter, and he followed it by catching the two-point conversion.
The performance was even more impressive because Evans continues to manage a rib injury. He was limited during the practice week but entered Sunday without a game designation and handled 10 targets against one of San Francisco’s biggest division rivals.
Evans has now caught 24 passes for 326 yards and three touchdowns through five games. His production has also increased over the last three weeks, going from 34 yards against Arizona to 76 against Denver before breaking through with 113 against Seattle.
San Francisco signed Evans to give its offense a proven outside receiver who could win in traffic and deliver in important moments. His Week 5 performance provided the clearest example of that value so far, and PFF’s grade showed just how effective he was.
