Texas A&M football entered the 2026 season with College Football Playoff expectations and hopes of competing for an SEC championship. Eight games later, those aspirations have faded, leaving the Aggies searching for answers as November approaches.
The bye week couldn't have come at a more important time for head coach Mike Elko and his staff. From inconsistent quarterback play and offensive struggles to defensive breakdowns and an inability to win away from Kyle Field, Texas A&M has several issues to address before returning to the field.
With road trips to South Carolina and Oklahoma and home matchups against Tennessee and Texas still ahead, the margin for error continues to shrink.
Here are five questions the Aggies need to answer during their
bye week before traveling to face South Carolina on November 7.
1. Is Marcel Reed still the best option at quarterback?
Reed's struggles continued against Alabama, throwing two early interceptions before settling down and helping Texas A&M take the lead. He finished 14-of-21 for 163 yards and one touchdown, but the offense disappeared in the fourth quarter.
Elko acknowledged considering backup Brady Hart during the game before deciding to stick with Reed. The bye week provides an opportunity to evaluate the quarterback position and determine whether a change could improve the offense.
2. Why does the offense disappear in critical moments?
Texas A&M entered the fourth quarter against Alabama leading 20-17, putting itself in position to pull off a much-needed SEC victory. Instead, the Aggies managed just 15 yards of offense over the final 15 minutes, with all three possessions ending in three-and-outs. The inability to sustain drives allowed Alabama to regain momentum and eventually take control.
Offensive coordinator Holmon Wiggins must find a way to keep the offense productive when opponents make adjustments, particularly in late-game situations when execution matters most.
3. Can Texas A&M finally win on the road?
The Aggies are winless in three road games this season, falling to LSU, Missouri and Alabama. Their inability to execute consistently away from Kyle Field has become one of the team's biggest concerns. That becomes particularly troubling with upcoming trips to South Carolina and Oklahoma, two opponents capable of making life difficult for the Aggies.
Texas A&M has performed considerably better at home, but finding a way to translate that success to hostile environments will be essential if the Aggies hope to salvage their season and reach bowl eligibility.
4. Can the defense eliminate costly breakdowns?
Texas A&M limited Alabama to just 68 rushing yards but surrendered 311 passing yards and three touchdowns to quarterback Keelon Russell. The defense showed flashes of improvement, particularly against the run, but costly coverage breakdowns allowed Alabama to capitalize on opportunities and make plays when it mattered most.
Defensive coordinator Lyle Hemphill must find ways to limit explosive plays and improve consistency in the secondary while maintaining the physicality that has helped the Aggies defensively. With several talented offenses remaining on the schedule, those adjustments will be critical.
5. Can Mike Elko keep this team motivated?
Perhaps the biggest question involves how the team responds to a disappointing season that began with College Football Playoff expectations. Texas A&M still needs two victories to become bowl eligible, with South Carolina, Tennessee, Oklahoma and Texas remaining on the schedule. With postseason hopes hanging in the balance, keeping players focused and motivated will be one of Elko's biggest challenges.
The Aggies still have an opportunity to finish strong, but doing so will require improved execution, accountability and leadership throughout the program. How this team responds to adversity over the final four games could say plenty about the direction of the program moving forward.
For Elko, the bye week is about more than making adjustments. It's an opportunity to determine whether Texas A&M can regain its footing before November.
