When it comes to Texas A&M athletics, ice hockey probably isn't the first sport that comes to mind. Or the second, third, or hundredth, for that matter. However, one thing Texas A&M fans understand is that the Lone Star Showdown doesn't care what sport is being played. When the Aggies and Longhorns face off, bragging rights are always on the line.
Sunday, Texas A&M's ice hockey team made sure those bragging rights belonged to the Aggies, skating past rival Texas in a convincing 5-1 victory. While the football rivalry traditionally dominates the conversation between the two universities, the competition extends well beyond Kyle Field and Darrell K Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium.
Texas A&M's ice hockey program competes at the American Collegiate Hockey
Association (ACHA) Division II level. The student-run club provides an opportunity for players to represent the university in competitive collegiate hockey, even though the sport isn't part of Texas A&M's NCAA athletics program.
The Aggies may not draw the same crowds as their football counterparts, but the rivalry carries just as much pride.
For a program that operates outside the spotlight of the university's major sports, beating Texas offers another opportunity to showcase the athletes representing the maroon and white. And regardless of whether the competition takes place on grass, hardwood or ice, one thing remains the same.
Beating Texas never gets old.
