The road back to the College Football Playoff does not get any easier from here, as the Texas A&M Aggies are set to open Southeastern Conference play against the Kentucky Wildcats, which boast one of the top offensive masterminds in college football at the helm.
After spending three seasons as Oregon's offensive coordinator, Will Stein took the reins of the Wildcats football program and is trying to turn things around in Lexington. Stein's squad demolished Youngstown State to open the season, but dropped his first contest as the head coach, 45-17, to the Alabama Crimson Tide in Week 2.
While Kentucky has flaws that were exposed against the No. 12 team in college football last weekend, the Aggies had their respective hiccups against Big 12 foe
Arizona State. The Wildcats and former Texas A&M defensive coordinator Jay Bateman will look to take advantage of them in College Station in Week 3.
Here are three areas to watch in Texas A&M's SEC opener against Kentucky at Kyle Field on Saturday:
Texas A&M secondary vs. explosive plays
Outside of his two pick-sixes in the fourth quarter, Cutter Boley had much success against the Aggies' secondary, especially when targeting wide receiver Reed Harris. Boley racked up 254 passing yards and two touchdowns, averaging 7.5 yards per completion, with Harris reeling in nine receptions for 189 of those yards and the two scores.
Texas A&M is tied for No. 51 in the FBS with five passes allowed of 20 yards or more through the first two games, most of which came in the 48-20 win over the Sun Devils. The secondary unit has the talent on paper to turn things around, but it all must start on Saturday against an athletic, dual-threat quarterback in Kenny Minchey.
Texas A&M's offensive line vs. Kentucky's defensive front
What once was Texas A&M's biggest strength has garnered massive questions entering SEC play in Week 3. The Aggies are tied for No. 71 with 4.0 sacks allowed and rank as the No. 74 rushing offense through the first two games of the 2026 season. If that kind of production continues, it could be a long season for the offensive line and the offensive unit as a whole.
Giving credit where it is due, Adam Cushing is one of the best offensive line coaches in the country and should be capable of making adjustments. However, with just one returning starter on the unit from last year's team, Texas A&M must make improvements in the trenches to establish a rushing attack and protect Marcel Reed.
Marcel Reed vs. Kentucky's defense
After a solid start to his junior season against Missouri State in Week 1, Reed's inconsistencies resurfaced against Arizona State. The Nashville, Tennessee, native still threw for 163 yards and three touchdowns, but his inaccuracy in the short game and inability to remain poised in the pocket at times cost the Aggies against the Sun Devils' defense.
One of the major aspects of Reed's game that he must improve moving forward is his ability to stay collected in the pocket and properly read through his progressions without panicking under pressure. He has the athleticism and speed to make nearly any defender in college football miss, but he sometimes gets happy feet, leading to errant throws and missed wide-open targets. If he can settle down and accurately find wide receivers like Mario Craver, Isaiah Horton and Terry Bussey, Reed can operate this offense at a high level and succeed in 2026.
Matched up against Bateman's defense, this should be an intriguing matchup. Kentucky sent pressure and made Alabama quarterback Keelon Russell uncomfortable in the pocket at times last Saturday, an approach it will likely try against Reed. It is integral for the Texas A&M gunslinger to remain calm and use his legs if he starts to feel the heat, which is where he can be the most dangerous.
