Texas A&M's 2026 season has been disastrous, but for some fans, especially those who expect the Aggies to finish 4-8, laughing through the pain is the only way to cope. After losing to Alabama 31-20 in Week 8, third-year coach Mike Elko may have to make drastic changes to his offensive and defensive coaching staff this offseason after making two critical hiring mistakes in elevating Holmon Wiggins and Lyle Hemphill to team OC and DC.
Since entering the SEC before the 2012 season, Texas A&M has gone through two coaching staffs, while former star quarterback and the program's second Heisman Trophy winner Johnny Manziel serves as the program's best achievement over the past thirteen seasons.
After making the College Football Playoff for the first
time in program history last season, starting quarterback Marcel Reed's regression, questionable play-calling on both sides of the ball, and the Aggies' inability to finish games, which was on display last Saturday after holding a 20-17 lead going into the fourth quarter against Alabama, likely won't be remedied this season.
Even worse, since rival Texas joined the SEC before the 2024 season, Mike Elko is 0-2 against the Longhorns and won't be favored at home in this year's matchup unless Texas completely falls apart before the regular-season finale. If Texas A&M finishes 4-8, per The Athletic, $45-50 million on the 2024 roster, SiriusXM host Chris Childers nailed his Texas A&M comparison to the MLB's New York Mets.
"Lots of spending. Lots of hype. Not enough substance. And always chasing big brother"
I can't disagree with this statement after watching Mike Elko fail to fix Texas A&M's issues this season, and until he and AD Trev Alberts make the necessary changes going into the 2027 offseason, the dedicated Aggie fan base's support will slowly waver, and rightly so.
Texas A&M is the Mets of college football.
