The Cincinnati Bengals didn’t escape the preseason without a fine letter from the NFL.
During the second week of the preseason, Bengals linebacker Shaka Heyward tackled Chicago Bears tight end Colston Loveland with form that appeared to be an infraction.
According to ESPN’s Ben Baby, the NFL agreed, hitting Heyward with a $5,972 fine for a hip-drop tackle.
The NFL has worked hard in recent years to completely remove that type of tackle due to injury rates, hence the standard fine process here for a really easy call.
Heyward didn’t make the initial 53 in Cincinnati but remains highly valued as depth and has since returned to the practice squad as one of the primary call-up candidates on a weekly basis.
