The Cincinnati Bengals have already signed a player off another team’s practice squad in response to injuries suffered by Andrei Iosivas and Colbie Young.
But the big answer for the problem at wideout is clearly already on the roster: Dohnte Meyers.
When Young went down with an injury early during the loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers, Meyers popped into the base lineup and did a good job of keeping the offense running smoothly.
No shock there for anyone, given Meyers’ superb offseason that forced him onto the final 53-man roster in the first place.
"I thought he had a really good feel for what we asked him to do. Block some big guys," Bengals head coach Zac Taylor told Geoff Hobson of Bengals.com. "It's hard because certain guys you put in there,
the personnel groupings are going to change on defense, and so sometimes Dohnte draws a difficult task with his responsibility, and I thought he gave everything he possibly could to make those blocks we needed from him.”
Besides Ja’Marr Chase, one could argue Meyers might have the best yards-after-catch ability on the wideout depth chart in Cincinnati. That makes him a seamless addition to the offense that defenses have to respect.
On paper, this means Meyers will stay in the base offense while perhaps helping with returns in the wake of the Bengals cutting Ke’Shawn Williams. The returning Mitchell Tinsley, signed off the Houston Texans practice squad, will likely be next up after Meyers, if needed.
