The Cincinnati Bengals have made it clear that they need to get Ja’Marr Chase the ball more.
But Chase hasn’t made the quiet Week 1 a big deal.
The guy who once infamously popped off with an “I’m always f—ing open” comment in his younger days isn’t sweating his two-catch day in the opener.
It’s a decision Chase made himself to be measured during the game and its aftermath.
“I held my attitude accountable,” Chase told Paul Dehner Jr. of Bengals.com. “I didn’t flip. I didn’t do no extra stuff. I acted like a pro. End of the day, I just wanted to win … I didn’t say nothing to nobody. I’m coming into work. That’s all I got to do.”
Chase doesn’t need to say anything about what everyone on the planet with even a passing familiarity of the sport already
knows: Chase needs the ball more.
Lots of weird little stuff went into his quiet day in the opener. Weird openings in the defense, seemingly uncalled penalties and otherwise played a role. Either way, Zac Taylor and other Bengals coaches have made it clear this week that Chase’s four targets weren’t enough.
All this does, though, is prime another Chase outburst. Last year, Chase had two catches in the opener before grabbing 14 of 16 targets for 165 yards and a touchdown in the second game.
