The topic of Cincinnati Bengals head coach Zac Taylor giving up play-calling duties has been a consistent one for fans over the years.
Taylor did just that during the preseason Week 2 game against the Chicago Bears, giving the controls over to offensive coordinator Dan Pitcher.
The results were good…just ask Taylor.
"Pitch did an excellent job. Before the game tonight, he did an excellent job," Taylor told Geoff Hobson of Bengals.com. "Great prep all week, preparing for this practice, (then) calling the game. I know he had a great feel for it. So, I thought he did an excellent job." …
Fun opportunity for Pitcher. He led a 27-9 win over the Bears, getting a 15-of-23 mark with 156 yards and two scores from Josh Johnson. Then, just five incompletions
from deep backup quarterback Sean Clifford.
Not that this is a sign of things to come from the Bengals. Taylor usually lets his coordinators have a game or two in the preseason to get live play-calling experience on the resume. Pitcher has been a hot name in hiring circles for years now too, so it helps.
Until something gets announced otherwise, the typical regular-season offensive play-calling will remain what Taylor describes as a collaborative effort.
