The Cincinnati Bengals are struggling at the linebacker spot right now.
Demetrius Knight and Barrett Carter just had big problems during the loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers. Depth has been an issue, which is why they bumped Joe Giles-Harris to the active roster from the practice squad before the game in Pittsburgh.
After the loss, though, the Bengals lost practice squad linebacker Shaka Heyward to the Miami Dolphins.
Depth woes and the Dolphins signing Heyward would explain why the Bengals worked out linebackers Emany Johnson and Anfernee Orji before Week 4.
Had the Dolphins not grabbed Heyward, he would’ve been one of the next players promoted to the 53, or at least bumped during game days, to join Giles-Harris, Oren Burks and Swayze Bozeman as key
depth.
Instead, the Bengals are keeping an eye on depth in free agency and perhaps other practice squads around the NFL.
