The Cincinnati Bengals entered Week 4 looking for wideout depth and special teams help.
Those Bengals cut Ke’Shawn Williams after serious miscues during the loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers, opening up the returner job. Andrei Iosivas recently went to injured reserve and rookie Colbie Young is hurt, too.
A reunion with Charlie Jones, then, would have made sense. One problem: The New York Giants happened to sign Jones to their active roster from the practice squad on Tuesday, preventing him from being signed by another team.
Maybe a happy coincidence, but everyone could sort of see what the Bengals were doing with their wideout room at the start of the week.
Alas, it’s the bed the Bengals have made for themselves. The coaching staff chose Williams
over Jones as a returner at final cuts and it has backfired. For now, coaches project to rely on Dohnte Meyers on returns while the returning Mitch Tinsley gets some of the work in the base offense as the third wideout.
