The second day of Cincinnati Bengals training camp felt quite a bit more like the usual thing.
Since the Bengals were ripping off three straight days to open up camp, Bengals head coach Zac Taylor gave some notable veterans rest days already.
That, plus some big injury news, headlined the day.
Exiting the work and looking ahead for more in a hurry, here are some notable takeaways from Day 2 work at Bengals camp.
Bengals training camp takeaways after Day 2
Great: Shemar Stewart injury update
Collective sigh of relief now. Shemar Stewart’s gnarly-looking knee injury that required a cart to leave the field is a hyperextension that won’t end his season. From the sounds of it, via Taylor, he could only miss a few weeks. They need him out there developing, not continuing the nagging injury trend set during his rookie year.
Not-so-great: Erick All’s accident
Bengals
tight end Erick All shared a story about getting hit by a vehicle while on vacation overseas and how it amped him up for training camp. Fun story, but given his injury history dating back through college and the seemingly poor luck there, more Bengals fans probably winced than got amped up with him.
Great: Rest days
BJ Hill is on the PUP taking his time coming back from an injury. Taylor isn’t taking any chances with his defensive line, either. On Day 2, Jonathan Allen was already watching the proceedings while getting a veteran rest day. Probably a smart move by all: Allen was a key free-agent signing this offseason and doesn’t need all the reps. His resting gives guys like Kris Jenkins a chance to develop and prove they belong, too.
Not-so-great: Joe Burrow interception
Joe Burrow tried to dump off to a running back on one notable play of Day 2 while facing pressure from a blitz and threw a pick.
Good news: It was Demetrius Knight in coverage. The Bengals went all-in on him and Barrett Carter at linebacker this offseason and need to see the development.
Bad news: Knight picked off Burrow. And the offense has been a little shaky. But Burrow is inevitably going to get his.
Just ask Knight.
"You don't get many chances to get one on No. 9," Knight said, according to Geoff Hobson of Bengals.com. "I'm not going to rest my hat on it because No. 9 isn't going to rest his hat on it. He's frustrated about it. I'm keeping my distance from him. He'll come back the silent assassin and be ready to avenge what happened today."
