Cincinnati Bengals defensive end Shemar Stewart remains on the injury comeback trail.
Along the way, he’s getting some major mentorship from the likes of new faces like Dexter Lawrence, Boye Mafe and Jonathan Allen.
In fact, those newcomers were a spotlight part of a recent conversation with Stewart.
"These guys are full of knowledge," Stewart told Geoff Hobson of Bengals.com. "They know what they're talking about. They know how to set people up, they know how to track people. Even though I haven't been around playing football, I feel more situationally aware just hearing them talk in the meetings."
Tack on veterans BJ Hill and TJ Slaton, and Stewart has a pretty good suite of role models to follow on top of the fact he now has one pro season under
his belt.
For now, the Bengals and Stewart are just thrilled he avoided a season-ending injury. But moving forward, the club hopes he leverages some of his new surrounding pieces to ample gain, too.
The additions of Lawrence, Allen and the rest, after all, were aimed at getting the most developmental upside out of names like Stewart, not just immediate on-field success.
