The way that the Jacksonville Jaguars deployed their cornerbacks in Week 1 against Cleveland was "rare," as defensive coordinator Anthony Campanile put it.
Throughout the game, Jarrian Jones, Travis Hunter, and Montaric Brown all saw steady playing time, as Campanile rotated the three at the outside cornerback position. All three defenders played between 29 and 38 defensive snaps, according to PFF.
Campanile's ability to do that speaks to the quality depth within this room.
"I think it's extremely rare," Campanile said of rotating at that position. "Great thing to be able to kind of tinker with every game and go into it in terms of who your matchups are, who's in together when and I think it gives you an opportunity to keep guys fresh. But also
when you have four guys at the corner position of that caliber, I haven't been around that. And the other thing I'll say about that is they're really selfless guys. They love playing together, they love football, love all the nuances that come with that in that position and knowing it and challenging each other to know it better every day. That's been really fun to watch with those guys too."
In a separate question, Campanile also mentioned how good the communication was between the cornerbacks on Sunday, as well as the safeties. When it comes to secondary play, that is often where success begins.
As Campanile notes, being able to lean on three outside cornerbacks gives him added flexibility as he builds out game plans, allowing him to really play matchups. The various situations that the Jaguars run into throughout a game could also dictate who is on the field.
Given the talent at this position and how well Sunday went, we will likely see this rotation continuing to take place moving forward.
