What a difference a week can make. In their season opener, the Jacksonville Jaguars looked unstoppable. However, in Week 2 against the Denver Broncos, the offense was flat, managing only one touchdown all game.
Quarterback Trevor Lawrence only had 189 passing yards and no touchdowns after throwing four touchdowns in the opener. Lawrence also had his first interception of the season, which ultimately led to a touchdown for the Broncos. At least the Jaguars are still on top in the AFC South.
Here is a look at the good, bad, and ugly from the Jaguars’ first loss of the year against the Denver Broncos:
The Good
Parker Washington: Going into the season, it was unclear who would serve as the No. 1 receiver on this team. The season opener was not completely revealing
because everyone in Jacksonville’s receiving game was getting in the end zone. But this game really shed light on the fact that Washington will be the top receiver. He had a good day too with seven receptions on 12 targets for 98 yards, including a 32-yard reception. Washington will continue to be a focal point of this offense going forward.
Bhayshul Tuten: Tuten scored the only touchdown of the game for the Jaguars, but he also had a good day on the ground. Even though he only had 65 rushing yards, he averaged an efficient five yards per carry. How well the run game would do was also a question going into this season after losing Travis Etienne in the offseason, but Tuten did fine as the No. 1 back today even though they lost.
The Bad
Too many big plays surrendered: There was good from the Jaguars defense, but ultimately, a lot of that was wiped out by too many explosive plays being surrendered in the pass game. Denver quarterback Bo Nix averaged over nine yards per pass attempt.
The red zone on offense: They technically had a 50 percent scoring rate in the red zone, but they only got to the red zone twice. If you want to win games, it generally requires getting into the red zone. Jacksonville’s offense struggled against this talented defense all game, and the lack of red zone trips really highlights that problem.
The Ugly
Pass rush: After getting five sacks in the opener against the Cleveland Browns, the Jaguars failed to get a single sack against the Denver Broncos. They also mustered just eight total pressures, according to PFF. Jacksonville had two games last season without a sack and were looking to perform better in the pass rush this season. So far against a good offense, that is not happening.
