The Jacksonville Jaguars made an addition prior to cutdown day, reportedly making a trade with the Miami Dolphins for second-year quarterback Quinn Ewers.
Adam Schefter is reporting that the Jaguars and Dolphins are swapping 2028 Day 3 draft picks in exchange for Ewers.
Ian Rapoport also reported that the Jaguars had been "quietly" calling around on backup quarterbacks. The play from the quarterbacks behind Trevor Lawrence this summer had been shaky.

Quinn Ewers started three games as a rookie
Ewers was a seventh-round pick out of Texas by the Dolphins in the 2025 NFL draft and earned the opportunity to start three games, while appearing in another.
Over his 98 dropbacks, Ewers was efficient, completing
66% of his 83 passes for 662 yards with three touchdowns and three interceptions.
From Weeks 16-18, Ewers ranked 14th in completion rate and 13th in yards per pass attempt. However, he was also tied for 11th in turnover-worthy play rate and ninth in pressure-to-sack rate, according to PFF.

"Ewers was once one of the most sought-after quarterbacks in the country, but by the end of his college career, he was nothing more than a flier for an NFL team. The Dolphins took a shot, and he ended up starting three games for the team as a rookie, leading them to a 1-2 record, with his lone win coming against the scuffling Tampa Bay Buccaneers. It wasn't exactly pretty.
"In camp this year, Ewers entered as the clear backup, but he struggled, throwing too many interceptions and just generally failing to capitalize on his opportunities. That trend continued in the preseason. He only played in one game, threw an interception, got hurt, and didn't appear again. While he was the favorite to be the team's backup in 2026 at the start of the offseason, it became evident quickly that he might not make the roster, which is saying something because the other contenders for the job weren't any better."
What will Ewers' role be with the Jaguars?
There are two paths the Jaguars could go down. With Ewers being a 2025 seventh-round pick, the Jaguars could keep Mullens and have Ewers be the third quarterback on the roster in a developmental role.
Or with Mullens' play being up and down for much of the year, perhaps the Jaguars put Ewers right into the backup role. Although still a young player, he does have starting experience from last season.
