The Jacksonville Jaguars have released the latest episode of "The Hunt," going behind the scenes of training camp as the team worked to decide its final 53-man roster.
Head coach Liam Coen stressed that his goal during that time of the year is to instill the culture and mentality he wants to see in the team for the upcoming season.
"I try to, for the last two years of day one of training camp, essentially, what's the message?" he said. "When these guys get in the building, what are they going to feel from us as coaches? What are they going to feel from the building when they walk in here? You want to make sure that the group has a unified message. They have something to work with, something to work towards as well. You really want that focus to be
very tight so that when they get in, they feel the energy, they feel the standard, and it continues to elevate. The standard continues to raise, and not for it to just be coach speak, for them to actually believe it and try to live it."
One of the difficulties the Jaguars will face over the next two years is their schedule; with EverBank Stadium undergoing renovations, Jacksonville will see very few games played at home in 2026, and none at all in 2027. That plays directly into the message Coen has for the team this season: anyone, anytime, anywhere. With the team on the road so much over the next two years, he pushed them to find whatever advantage they can elsewhere.
"What we are going to be training - our mindset and mentality - we are always going to chase, compete, and find our edges," he said. "We are in constant pursuit of finding an edge, softening that edge, creating our edge. Every year is a new year."
Furthermore, he hit back on the potential mindset of the schedule being a disadvantage, but instead, Coen said it should fuel them to work even harder and prove how good this team truly is.
"There is no secret that we aren't going to be playing a whole ton of games over the next few years here in Jacksonville. I think it's 32 of the next 40 are going to be played elsewhere," Coen said. "So we can use that as an excuse. We can use that — man, that they're in an unfair advantage. This, that, and the third. Or, we can say, any one, any time, any way. And that's the mindset. That is what we are training every single day. We are training to say, drop us off anywhere, and we're going to play our brand of football — our brand."
In previous interviews, Jacksonville coaches and staff have said there is a unified vision for this team, which is surely welcome after years of constant instability and turnover. A clear vision, along with a strong, well-defined team identity and philosophy, is what leads to long-term success.
