The Philadelphia Eagles kicked a field goal to take a 17-16 lead against the Jacksonville Jaguars with just eight seconds left in the game. It looked like Jacksonville would be dropping to 3-2, but Ameer Abdullah and Cam Little had other ideas.
On his third kickoff return of the game, Abdullah returned it 53 yards and was tackled with one second left to give Jaguars kicker Cam Little a chance to win it with a 57-yard game-winning field goal.
The snap was high from DaVon Hamilton, but punter Logan Cooke got it down to allow Little to make the field goal and win the game 19-17 for the Jaguars. They are now 4-1 and have won 12 of their last 13 regular season games dating back to last season.
Here is a look at the good, bad, and ugly from the Jaguars’
most exciting win of the year against the Philadelphia Eagles:
The Good
A win is a win: It is not over until the clock hits all zeroes. Jacksonville showed that they will fight until the game is over, even if it seems like they do not have a chance of winning. However, they could have avoided being in this position if they had not been penalized so much and had capitalized in the red zone. Still, this was an impressive win for the Jaguars as they moved to 4-1 on the year and maintained their solo lead in the AFC South.
Kickoff returns: Kick returns usually are not seen as an important part of the game, but their kick return game turned out to be the difference between a win and a loss. Abdullah averaged 32.7 yards per return, saving his best for last with the 53-yard return that set up the game-winning field goal.
Jaguars run defense: We'll reserve a spot here for the run defense every week until proven otherwise. The Jaguars held the Eagles to just 22 rushing yards and 1.2 yards per carry.
Parker Washington: Washington had an offensive explosion in this game with six receptions for 124 yards and two touchdowns. It was easily his best game of the season. This was Washington’s first game with multiple receiving touchdowns. His six receptions were tied for the fourth-most in a game in his career, and this was just his fourth game with over 100 receiving yards. Through the first five games, Washington has emerged as Jacksonville’s leading receiver, and he really put on a show in London.
The Bad
Third down efficiency: Jacksonville came into this game with the third-highest third down conversion rate in the NFL. However, they only converted five of 16 third-down attempts in this game, which is barely over 30 percent of their third downs. Some inconsistent play on early downs led to the Jaguars being behind the sticks at times.
Red zone efficiency: This is partially because of penalties, but the Jaguars did a lot of nothing in the red zone. They failed to score a touchdown on all three of their red zone trips. Jacksonville was one of the best teams in the NFL in the red zone through the first four games; they need to find a way to get back to that against the Houston Texans next week.
The Ugly
Penalties: Perhaps the worst part of this game was watching how the Jaguars kept shooting themselves in the foot with penalties. They finished the game with a total of 13 penalties, including multiple delay of game penalties. Their penalties in the red zone were particularly harmful, especially on their one drive in the fourth quarter, with a total of five penalties, including two delay-of-game penalties in the red zone and a false start at the one-yard line. They now have at least 10 penalties in four games this season; that is going to cost them against playoff contenders and nearly cost them against the Eagles in this game.
