ESPN'sSeth Walder recently ranked every backup quarterback from No. 1 through 32, which is where the Jacksonville Jaguars' Quinn Ewers ended up.
Walder acknowledged that for many of these quarterbacks, there's not much information on them out there, so the margin for error with this exercise is "large," as he put it.
"But that shouldn't prevent us from doing these rankings -- after all, teams must make choices about their backups with similarly scarce information," Walder wrote.
Although Walder didn't provide any reasoning behind Ewers' No. 32 ranking, it is likely, in part, due to his inexperience.
A 2025 seventh-round draft pick, Ewers appeared in four games last season, with three starts, completing 66% of his passes for 622 yards with three touchdowns
and three interceptions. He has 98 career regular-season dropbacks, according to PFF.
To go along with his relative inexperience, he's still learning a new offense on the fly as well. So during these first two games, Jacksonville has elevated veteran Nick Mullens from the practice squad to be Trevor Lawrence's backup on game days.
That said, in trading for Ewers, the Jaguars are clearly bullish on his upside and potential.
"I thought watching some of the stuff he did last year when he got some ops to go play, I thought he showed some signs, being able to spread the ball around to different spots on the field," said Liam Coen after the Jaguars traded for Ewers. "(He) has some arm talent. I liked him coming out of Texas. I think Sark (Steve Sarkisian) does a really good job with the quarterbacks. He's a young player that you can kind of pour into and see what that looks like as we can go."
