A noteworthy development has taken place in training camp for the Jacksonville Jaguars'offense.
John Shipley of Jaguars on SI recently highlighted one thing he's learned about each Jaguars' position group in training camp, and at the running back position, he took notice of LeQuint Allen's expanded role in the passing game.
"He has gotten more looks in the passing game in training camp this year than he did at this time a year ago," Shipley wrote. "Just how much more of a passing game load he gets remains to be seen, but it does seem like the uptick is about to be very real."
Earlier this offseason, head coach Liam Coen mentioned his desire to get Allen more pass-catching opportunities, and that seems to be coming to fruition in camp.
Allen was
on the field often during passing situations as a rookie, but he was primarily utilized as a blocker, where he excelled. However, in college at Syracuse, he was highly productive as a pass catcher.
During the 2024 season, Allen's final at the college level, he had 78 targets, which was tied for the most among all running backs, and he was fourth in yards, according to PFF.
When Coen was the offensive coordinator in Tampa Bay, the running back's ability to impact the passing game was important. Even if the ball doesn't go his direction, that's another player that defenses have to be concerned about.
That said, the Jaguars have a number of pass-catching options on offense, so as Shipley noted, how much Allen's target share increases is not exactly known. But it does sound like more opportunities will be coming Allen's way, and even if there is the threat of him getting the ball, defenses will have to account for his presence on the field.
