The Jacksonville Jaguars announced their initial 53-man roster this weekend, and while there were some surprises, the addition of undrafted free agent (UDFA) Bryan Thomas Jr. was not one of them.
Despite his status as a UDFA and having to battle a crowded edge room, Thomas performed incredibly well this summer, particularly during the preseason, which he capped with an especially dominant performance against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the finale.
After having been a standout performer throughout the offseason, Thomas found himself in the 53-man roster conversation down the stretch. General manager James Gladstone then made it clear in a recent press conference that Thomas' play in the final preseason game cemented his spot.
"There was still more
to be done, and I think he went out there and continued to prove it. He left no doubt. I think anybody that was on that sideline in those stands or watching on TV could feel that," Gladstone said of Thomas' performance against the Buccaneers.
"I think he himself probably felt that. It wasn't shortly thereafter the next morning that I walked past him, and it was a very brief interaction, and all I said was 'Congrats.' And he said, 'I really appreciate it,' and all I said was, 'Earned.' And he said, 'Yeah, I feel that.' And you could just sense his confidence on the grass that night, in the locker room post, and that next morning, because that's something that we preach, and I think our players certainly are coming to grips with it. But when you earn it, you're going to get it, and we're not afraid or going to shy away from the fact that when that is something that surfaces to the top to pursue it, regardless of where you started, regardless of how much you make, we're trying to win football games, and we're going to do what we feel like is in the best interest of the Jacksonville Jaguars and our team heading into 2026, and best 11 are going to get out there."
According to PFF, Thomas finished the preseason with eight quarterback pressures and he was in on four sacks.
Thomas was the sole UDFA to make the 53-man roster, turning a strong summer into one of the team's biggest offseason success stories.
